February 24 in Sardinia will be the day dedicated to the theme of organ donation: it will be celebrated with an annual event. The commitment was made by the president of the regional council, Michele Pais, who this morning met with representatives of the Prometheus association, which represents liver transplant recipients.

The chosen date is not accidental: in 2004, that day, the Brotzu cardiac surgery team, made up of Alessandro Ricchi, Antonio Carta and Gianmarco Pinna, died in a plane crash in the Sinnai mountains, while transporting an organ.

"It is an idea that we embrace with enthusiasm", explained Pais, "I have already addressed the issue at the conference of group leaders who unanimously accepted the proposal. The day will serve to strengthen the awareness campaign on such an important issue".

Pino Argiolas, president of Prometeo, illustrated some data on transplants in Sardinia which this year, after the difficulties of the last two years, mark a positive trend: "56 interventions have already been carried out in these first 9 months of 2022, in 2020 there had been 61 in all the year. But the most interesting data is the drop in opposition to transplants, which went from 45% to 32% ”.

In Sardinia there are about 2200 patients who have undergone an organ transplant (liver, kidney, heart, lung, pancreas). Everyone can count on a check disbursed by the Region reserved until last year for kidney transplants only: "We thank the regional policy for this - said Argiolas - each transplant recipient now receives a check for about 200 euros per month which can become 300 for patients with dependent children and low ISEE income ".

Finally, the representatives of liver transplants received a request for an intervention by the presidency of the council with the Anci so that all Sardinian municipalities provide for the possibility of giving consent to organ donation in the issuing of identity cards. Currently 300 (out of 377) municipalities have joined the initiative.
