Only an incinerated wreck of the Fiat Panda owned by the mayor of Nurri, Antonello Atzeni, remained. Last night, probably before three in the morning, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Given the public role, the investigation by the carabinieri of the Isili Company was immediately triggered. The intentional origin of the fire is very probable, even if the investigations will continue in the next few days on the vehicle seized and immediately taken away from the scene of the fire. The mayor stated that he has never received threats and that he has always carried out his activity as administrator in the Town Hall serenely.

The investigators seized the video surveillance images captured by the cameras in the area. More will be known in the coming days.

The alarm

Some people who noticed what was happening raised the alarm. At 4 the firefighters from the Mandas station arrived on the spot, shortly after the carabinieri from the Nurri station and the Compagnia di Isili arrived, led by Benedetto Paolucci. The military immediately made all the findings of the case and found everything that was necessary to start the investigation into the causes that led to this.

"We're not ruling out any leads," said Captain Paolucci, "but we still can't say whether it was arson or not."

The car was parked on the street near the mayor's home.

Mayor Antonello Atzeni preferred to avoid making comments on the incident, therefore waiting for what will emerge from the investigations launched by the carabinieri.

Silence also from fellow mayors of Sarcidano, Barbagia di Seulo and the mountain community who thus wanted to respect the position of their colleague who has been at the helm of the country for three legislatures. And in the last two electoral rounds Atzeni had no opponents: the population largely confirmed their trust in the mayor and his list.
