A symbolic sentence, but one destined to reignite the debate between tradition and compliance with safety regulations. Nuoro Court Judge Filippo Orani has sentenced nine riders involved in the 2022 edition of Sa Vardia, the spectacular and ancient horse race that annually enlivens the streets of Orgosolo on the feast of Saints Peter and Paul.
Each of the defendants was fined €40, in addition to court costs. The decision comes at the end of proceedings involving Enrico Buffa, Vincenzo Corrias, Francesco Cossu, Pietro Gesuino Cubeddu, Marco Filindeu, Emiliano Monni, Andrea Muggianu, and Graziano Rubanu, represented by lawyers Antonello Cao, Giuseppe Floris, Marco Basolu, Michele Mannironi, and Margherita Bragagliu.
The nine were accused of participating in the June 29, 2022, demonstration without the necessary permits and required security measures, in violation of Royal Decree 773 of 1931, which governs public safety laws. They were identified by police officers who, after completing their investigations, filed charges. During the trial, the defense sought to emphasize the profound historical, anthropological, and religious significance of Sa Vardia, one of the most heartfelt events for the Orgosolo community. The Prosecutor's Office also requested an acquittal. These arguments, however, were not enough to convince the court.
