Twenty-six years in prison plus three years of probation: this is the sentence handed down by the Assize Court in Cagliari to twenty-one-year-old Gabriele Cabras for the murder of Gabriele Pergola, killed in a room at the B&B "Corte Cristina" in Quartucciu in July 2023.
Prosecutor Diana Lecca concluded her closing argument by requesting a life sentence, without mitigating circumstances, believing that the trial had demonstrated that the young man strangled the 43-year-old during a robbery.
The defense, led by lawyer Giovanni Cabras, had a different opinion, and had urged the defendant's acquittal, believing it was not voluntary homicide.
According to the prosecutor's office, the young man and the victim met at a bed and breakfast in Quartucciu, where an argument broke out. The young man allegedly attacked the 43-year-old, knocking him to the ground, and then strangling him with a towel. After killing him, he fled, but was spotted walking in Sinnai thanks to the facility's surveillance cameras and those scattered around the area.
