A long evening of searches by the Carabinieri of the Muravera and Villasimius Stations and the Radiomobile Unit, to look for an elderly couple of spouses aged 96 and 86, missing in the countryside of Sarrabus after having gone out in the afternoon in search of asparagus.

The alarm was raised in the evening, when the elderly, surprised by the darkness and unable to find the path back, contacted the emergency number 112, asking for help in a tired but lucid voice. From that moment on, a race against time began: the Carabinieri began the search, combing every inch of the most impervious areas of the Muravera countryside.

For hours, the soldiers combed the Mediterranean scrub, following dirt paths and irrigation canals, until, around 10:45 p.m., they finally managed to locate the couple. The 96-year-old, in a desperate attempt to find his way home, had ended up inside an irrigation canal of the land reclamation works, unable to go back up due to tiredness and advanced age. The Carabinieri immediately reached him, lifted him up and rescued him, while his exhausted wife waited for them nearby.

As a precaution, both were transported to the Emergency Room of the Muravera hospital, where they received the necessary treatment.
