The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella will preside over the ceremony in memory of the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the battleship "Roma" in the Gulf of Asinara. The commemoration is set, according to the agenda of the Quirinale, for 9 September at 11.

No other details are yet known about the event which coincides with "The Day of Remembrance for Sailors who disappeared at sea" and could also bring some Navy flagships to the Gulf of Asinara, such as the aircraft carrier Garibaldi or the aircraft carrier Cavour. It is possible that the president will arrive at the military airport of Fertilia, in the territory of Alghero where the Head of State spent his summer holidays in 2022 and 2021.

The battleship Roma, flagship of the Regia Marina, was sunk on 9 September 1943 hit by German bombers, immediately after the armistice while reaching the island of La Maddalena from the port of La Spezia. 1529 men died in the sinking and its wreck is located 16 miles from the coast in the Gulf of Asinara.
