The funeral of Lazzarino Pinna, the soldier of Maracalagonis who died in Poland in 1944 during the Second World War, took place this evening in Maracalagonis. His remains, enclosed in an urn draped in the Italian flag, finally rest in his hometown cemetery.
When the relatives and the faithful arrived at the cemetery on the outskirts of the town, it had already grown dark in an atmosphere of great emotion, amidst the notes of the Maracalagonis musical band, the “Silenzio”, the banner of the Municipality, with the mayor Francesca Fadda, the flag of the National Association of the Fallen in War, soldiers of the Army and the Carabinieri.
Lazzarino's family carried the Italian-draped urn to the small tomb where the hero will finally rest in peace after being blessed by the parish priest, Don Niccolò Prasciolu.
THE STORY
There is so much emotion for a story that could not be forgotten. Lazzarino went to war in the early 1940s. In 1944, he died in Poland, and all trace of him, like that of so many other soldiers, was lost. His remains were recovered in Lambinowice, thanks to extraordinary collaboration between Italy and Poland , which made it possible to trace the remains of about thirty Italian soldiers who died in the Eastern European country during the world war.
A few months ago, a Carabinieri officer from the Maracalagonis station reported the discovery of the remains to the Pinna family. He knocked on the door of Iride , one of the Sardinian soldier's closest relatives, and was greeted by Antonio Tronci , a 42-year-old engineer (Iride's son), who had thus informed him of the recovery of his distant uncle's body. There was a possibility of bringing the remains of the soldier, who had fallen in the war and was identified by a tag he wore with his serial numbers, back to Maracalagonis.
The other day, Antonio Tronci and his mother Iride traveled to Rome by boat and car, invited to the Fosse Ardeatine Mausoleum, where the funeral urns of Italian soldiers had arrived from Poland. They then returned to Maracalagonis. Today is the funeral.
