No biological traces present on the clothes of Manuela Murgia , the 16 -year-old found lifeless in the canyon of the Tuvixeddu necropolis on February 5, 1995, are compatible with the genetic profile of her ex-boyfriend, Enrico Astero, now 54, a hairdresser, investigated on charges of voluntary homicide of the young girl.
The Carabinieri of the RIS (Special Investigations Unit) in Cagliari have written it down in black and white, having completed the expert assessment requested by the preliminary investigations judge, Giorgio Altieri. The experts appointed by the investigating judge during the preliminary investigations hearing have unequivocally ruled out the possibility that the biological traces could in any way be traced back to the suspect.
After completing the lengthy and complex technical investigation, the military personnel of the Scientific Investigations Unit—coordinated by Colonels Andrea Berti and Marco Palanca— delivered to the judge the expert report that identified 89 biological traces, including 49 hairs, all of which were examined and compared.
Specifically, a male genetic profile, not attributable to Astero, was found in a hair found in the bag containing the girl's boots, removed before the autopsy. All other traces found on the sweater and underwear are attributable to Manuela Murgia herself, while the DNA found in the pants, near the ankle, also appears to be female, but of a profile yet to be identified.
Once all the comparisons were completed in the RIS laboratories in San Bartolomeo, the specialists were able to exclude, with a "certainty" level, that there were traces of the ex-boyfriend on the clothes.
The conclusions of the RIS will now have to be compared with those of the defense consultants and of Manuela Murgia's family at the hearing on January 29 before Judge Giorgio Altieri , but in the meantime the need for a new super-expert report is emerging that will have to establish once and for all how the 16-year-old died.
