Liliana Segre's words reached Nuoro where, on the occasion of the screening of the film " The Pianist " - organized yesterday in the hall of the Arcobaleno multifunctional center -, the mayor Andrea Soddu asked the senator for life to intervene .
The initiative closed the celebrations for the Day of Remembrance , followed by a debate moderated by the director of the Institute for the History of Anti-Fascism and the Contemporary Age in Central Sardinia (Istasac) Marina Moncelsi .
«Mr Mayor of Nuoro, Andrea Soddu, I am very happy to answer your request and I thank you with the prayer that I extend my best regards to all those present, to Professor Marina Moncelsi, and to the entire Nuoro community. Zakhor ! Remember! One of the most recurring terms in the biblical text , nails us to our responsibilities, to the duty of the highest testimony, which we, survivors of the tragedy of the Holocaust , have assumed as a civil duty - reads the letter to the city -. Memory is my obsession, my obsession. Why? Because it is the function of the world. Because it is a primary good, a global public good. Remembering is not a passive exercise but a living matter, an electrical signal that keeps alertness high, lymph, nourishment for the future».
Between the lines, Segre quotes Salvatore Satta , admitting that he does not want to use metaphors to represent memory because « above this city hovers the spirit of Salvatore Satta who made “ The Day of Judgment ” a cathedral of Memory . Memory is an imperfect mending of a path of civil healing, a path that serves to keep Democracy in good health . Enjoy your vision and meditate why all this was. Thank you, Liliana Segre».
The mayor felt strong emotion on receiving the message, addressed to the community: «It is a profound, touching letter. Words that bear witness to the tragedy of the Holocaust that only those who lived through it could write. Words that we have a duty to keep and hand down in turn». And with regard to the unexpected mention of Satta: "It is another gift that the senator wanted to give us and I thank her for this too on behalf of the whole city", concludes Soddu.
