The Municipality of Porto Torres is also participating this year in the “Romanesque Days 2024”, a journey through medieval art and architecture.
Over the weekends from September 21st to October 13th, over one hundred cathedrals, abbeys and country churches have decided to open their doors in Sardinia, Sicily and Lombardy, allowing visitors to discover one of the most fascinating periods in Italian history.
The main protagonist of the Turritano municipality will be the Basilica of San Gavino, the largest and most majestic Romanesque church in Sardinia, which can be visited freely on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th from 10 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 6 pm. On both days, the Turris Bisleonis cooperative, which takes care of the tourist-cultural accompaniment service inside the basilica, will guarantee a free guided tour from 5 pm to 6 pm.
The event is part of the Italia Romanica project, a national network dedicated to the enhancement of the Romanesque heritage, promoted by the “Sardegna Isola del Romanico” Foundation of which the Municipality of Porto Torres has been a founding member since 2021. The Romanesque basilica of San Gavino, shrouded in history and mysterious legends, is the symbol of the medieval city of Torres, capital of the homonymous Giudicato.
