Fear in the Bancali prison in Sassari, where an inmate (who a few days ago had attacked a superintendent of the Penitentiary Police) set fire in his cell, with the flames spreading quickly and the smoke invading the entire section triggering panic among the other inmates.

Michele Cireddu , the general secretary of the Uil Pa of the Sardinian Penitentiary Police, recounts what happened.

«Even with visibility reduced to a minimum and the air unbreathable – explains Cireddu – the Agents managed to enter the cell of the person responsible for the fire, taking him to safety despite his attempts at aggression. Then the same officers evacuated the entire section, securing all the other inmates and then managed with difficulty to put out the flames."

«Just recently we met the new Superintendent for
denounce the serious situation in which the Sassari Institute finds itself ", continues Cireddu. «For too many years now the Institute has not been managed by a Commander and a Director on a permanent basis and this managerial precariousness inevitably has repercussions on staff who do not have a single management line».
«Today there was a near tragedy in Sassari – continues Cireddu – and 6 policemen are currently in hospital for having breathed the toxic fumes caused by the fire, while they were rescuing the inmates. And if they had not intervened immediately, without worrying about the physical consequences they would face, the deaths would most likely have been counted ."
