The wave of bad weather that has kept the island in the grip of water bombs and warnings for more than a month has not subsided. And even if the sun is shining today in the Cagliari area, the Nuorese bends (once again) under the weight of the continuous rain.

Summer 2023 is therefore waiting. And if for some the unstable weather meant a postponed costume rehearsal, for many others it meant discomfort and worries, with crops destroyed, farms with throat water and major damage. To take stock of the situation Sardinia is experiencing «we must make some assumptions and start from the fact that the spring we greeted was not like the usual, but was characterized by low temperatures and several days of unstable weather», explains Carlo Spanu, lieutenant colonel of the Decimomannu Air Force weather service . «This situation - continues Spanu -, characterized by the persistence of low pressure, has led to rains, often concentrated in the afternoon. And it is certainly a condition that is not typical of Sardinia ».

The last month was characterized above all by the intense rains, concentrated in certain places (as if they were "targeted interventions"), which sometimes affected large areas, sometimes small spaces. So why is it often difficult to predict bad weather, with forecasts that change punctually from hour to hour ? «Usually the rains arrive due to the transit of a perturbation or cloud systems. In this case, however, the creation of storm systems takes place "above us". This means that we are able to easily predict the arrival of bad weather and the duration of the phenomenon but we cannot know exactly when it will occur», explains the lieutenant colonel.

However, for those who watch the weather apprehensively, hoping not to see the storm icon, there is good news. But for the real summer we still have to wait because «not only will there be no improvement in the next few days but even an exacerbation of the situation is expected, between Wednesday and Thursday. For the good weather we have to wait for the arrival of a perturbation, whether it's the Azores or the African anticyclone, and this will happen in the second ten days of the month», concludes Spanu.
