Cagliari: How the agricultural crisis is turning the hinterland countryside into open-air landfills.

The countryside surrounding Quartu and Quartucciu is a disheartening place, strewn with old car wrecks, windows, tires, and construction debris. All this material makes a disgraceful display, sometimes clearly visible, sometimes even hidden among weeds and Mediterranean scrub, on land now abandoned to its fate by an agricultural crisis that now appears irreversible.

And in this state of neglect and crisis, illegal landfills are reigning supreme, as is now the case almost everywhere, leaving the hinterland municipalities unable to put an end to this degradation. The photographs, taken primarily in the uncultivated lands in the Quartucciu countryside, overlooking Simbiritzi and bordering the same lake in the Quartu area, speak for themselves. The situation in the countryside around Selargius, Sinnai, and Maracalagonis is not much different.

A phenomenon often discussed in city councils. Municipalities have intervened several times. However, it's impossible to eradicate a phenomenon like this: car wrecks, old appliances, bottles, and bags of garbage thrown even onto the ditches of the busiest roads, such as the ring road and the old Orientale Sarda, right at the Simbiritzi.

A disturbing phenomenon, a veritable transformation of the countryside into open-air landfills.
