Now it's official: there will be no trial for the inferno of fire that devastated the Oristano area, and Montiferru in particular, between 24 and 25 July 2021, sending 13 thousand hectares of territory up in smoke and destroying homes and farms.

The judge of the Court of Oristano Federica Fulgheri has in fact accepted the request for dismissal presented in April by prosecutor Sara Ghiani , who coordinated the investigation into the maxi-fire, the largest ever to occur in Sardinia.

A decision that left a bad taste in the mouths of Sandra Sassu, Gianfranco Cubadde, Roberto Dau and Giuseppe Piras, Maria Serena Contini and Rafaele Cocco, the lawyers who on behalf of residents and entrepreneurs affected by the consequences of the fire had asked for a supplement of investigations, considering the dismissal request made by the Prosecutor's Office to be unacceptable .

In her brief, the prosecutor had concluded that the investigations and technical checks indicated that the Montiferru fire was not attributable to the hands of arsonists or to "human" deficiencies or errors, but rather to a purely accidental event . A tragic fatality, in short.

The lawyers of the injured parties, however, underlined how the prosecutor had not focused on the "absolute lack of prevention, on the responsibilities linked to the care of the territory and the mitigation of risk, including the absence of firebreaks" .

The lawyers had also asked for clarity on the forces deployed to put out the fires in the various phases of the emergency.

From what has been reconstructed, the gigantic fire was started by a car that was traveling along the provincial road between Bonarcado and Santu Lussurgiu: due to the heat and the wind some embers came back to life, fueling the fire front that reached Santu Lussurgiu and subsequently the territories of Cuglieri and Scano Montiferro.

For two days hundreds of homes and farms were evacuated in the area and countless water drops were carried out by helicopters and Canadair, which went into action together with dozens of ground teams to try to tame the flames and limit the damage.
