Whose choice is it to end one's life, when continuing to exist in this world is an immense toil, and merely breathing can no longer be considered living? It's a painful dilemma, one that has been recurring in public debate for years, and tonight (at 8 pm) in Sennariolo, a small village in the Montiferru region, it will be performed in the form of an opera: "Aut Aut," with music by Battista Giordano and libretto by Gilberto Ganassi.

This is the first performance of the opera, for which open rehearsals were held yesterday. It is part of the "Sound and Word in Musical Theatre" series, organized by the municipal administration, which concludes tomorrow (at 8 pm, via Regina Elena) with "Tan va jan," a recital of mystical Persian and biblical texts.

Produced by the Iglesias Concert Association, with the collaboration of the municipality led by Gianbattista Ledda, "Aut Aut" is a one-act play with six scenes, set in a courtroom. A young doctor is accused of helping her partner take his own life after providing him with a lethal drug. During the trial, several witnesses testify, each offering their own opinion. Ganassi, a seasoned magistrate and deputy public prosecutor, effectively reconstructs the interplay of viewpoints, which, when well-argued, can all appear valid. The drama, says Giordano, a musician and composer from Nuoro, is enhanced by "contemporary musical writing, with elements of lieder." The narrative, which alternates characters' arias with spoken parts, "seeks to portray the bewilderment that human beings feel in the face of the force of destiny." "It's a profound reflection on the themes of life and death, which is why we supported the initiative," says the mayor of the town of 150 inhabitants.

On stage, in the open space on Via Padre Ruffino, will be experienced singers, all trained by Maestro Andrea Cossu: Claudia Spiga (soprano), Sara Spanu (mezzo-soprano), Michelangelo Romero (tenor), and Nicola Ebau (baritone). Performing alongside Cossu at the piano will be: the "Ars Musicandi Quartet," led by Maestro Donatella Parodi (Marco Ligas and Maria Vicentini, violins; Donatella Parodi, viola; Luca Carta Mantiglia, cello); the San'Andrea di Sennariolo Polyphonic Choir, conducted by Rossana Cossu; while the narrators are Emanuele Pisano, Andrea Zucca, and Ganassi himself; the conductor is Carlos Garfias.
