He dived daily in that stretch of sea he knew like the back of his hand. And there Vittorio Pilloni, an 84-year-old expert diver, died this morning during a spearfishing session in the waters of Capo Sant'Elia, the seabed of which he had explored every nook and cranny .

He had dived as he did practically every day, but he never resurfaced . The alarm was raised around 10:30 a.m., when some people, seeing him fail to resurface after several minutes, called the Coast Guard operations room .

The local police, present in the area, initially intervened, then the operation was handed over to the Coast Guard, which arrived on the scene with a patrol boat and a diving dinghy . Firefighter divers also provided assistance.

The man was found lifeless on the seabed, likely struck down by illness, a short distance from the coast . After his death was confirmed and his body was identified, it was released to his family.
