The helicopter that crashed today around 1pm in the Carrara area had contributed to putting out numerous fires that broke out during the summer season in Sardinia. An accident cost the life of the pilot, Naomi Maiolani, just 28 years old.
The firefighting aircraft was based in Pula for almost the entire duration of the campaign, before moving to Villasalto in the last phase. This morning he took off from the Fenosu base to return to Sondrio.
There was only the young pilot on board. During the flight over an area between Massa Carrara and Luni, in the La Spezia area, something went wrong, perhaps due to the strong wind: the helicopter may have hit some cables and crashed to the ground .
The firefighters arrived at the site of the crash and launched some retardant substances to avoid starting fires in the wooded area. A speleoalpine rescue team was also on site, given the inaccessible nature of the area. Naomi Maiolani's body was found after at least an hour of searching.
The National Flight Safety Agency (ANSV) has opened an investigation into the accident and has ordered the dispatch of an inspector to the area for an operational inspection, in coordination with the competent judicial authority and the police .
