In "a few weeks," Luigi Chiatti, the so-called "Monster of Foligno," will undergo an assessment to determine his danger to society. This assessment will allow the supervisory magistrate to determine whether he can leave the Capoterra REMS prison, where he is being held under the security measure imposed by the sentence that handed him a 30-year prison sentence (now served) for the murders of Lorenzo Paolucci and Simone Allegretti, between October 1992 and the summer of 1993.

In 2015, at the end of his prison sentence, Chiatti was transferred to Capoterra under a security measure that the Cagliari Surveillance Court continued to extend based on reports within the facility. At least until now. Because at the next hearing—which will be held at the end of November— the mandate for a reevaluation of Chiatti's mental state will be formalized, an analysis that hasn't been performed in over ten years.

Maria Cristina Ornano, president of the Cagliari Surveillance Court, reiterates that the review of social danger is an essential prerequisite for a measure that must be "concrete and timely," emphasizing the "need to strike a difficult balance between protecting the health of the person subject to the measure and the interests of the community."
