Half Sardinia at risk of desertification . A phenomenon that is advancing in the world, driven by global warming and drought.

Today is the UN Day for the fight against desertification, and it is a real war bulletin with about 200 countries in the world and 1 billion inhabitants affected to some extent by this phenomenon.

The most scourged are in the tropical area, in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. But even southern Europe is not immune, including Italy.

According to Anbi, the Italian association of basin consortia, 70% of the surface of Sicily has a medium-high degree of desertification risk . Molise (58%), Puglia (57%), Basilicata (55%) follow. Six regions ( Sardinia , Marche, Emilia Romagna, Umbria, Abruzzo and Campania) have a percentage of the territory at risk between 30% and 50%, while another 7 (Calabria, Tuscany, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Lombardy, Veneto and Piedmont) are between 10% and 25%.

'' Half of the world's population is already facing the consequences of soil degradation - UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres writes on Twitter -. We can and must reverse this downward spiral . ''

In Spain, desertification affects 72% of the territory, particularly in the south of the country, where extreme intensive agriculture is practiced, with a large use of groundwater. In Greece it is estimated that, by the end of the century, at least 70% of the territory will become arid.
