After the water bomb and the exceptional unseasonal hailstorm that hit Mandas yesterday, the mayor Umberto Oppus urgently summoned the Municipal Council which, late in the evening, approved the state of natural disaster in the municipal area.

The clouds unloaded large quantities of hailstones that invaded the countryside and roads of the Mandas territory. Then the rain transformed the streets of the town into rivers of water and ice.

“We are worried - says the mayor - above all about the situation of the vineyards . The damage is already evident, the hail has shaved the shoots, we fear very serious consequences for the harvest in an area suited to high quality production. But even those who work in the gardens could cry for the damage caused yesterday by bad weather ".

Oppus will carry out an inspection today: “It is already possible - continues Oppus - to make a picture of the situation in the town. In the historic center, the water bomb caused the sewage to escape from the sewer system which failed to dispose of the enormous amount of water rained from the sky. Many basements and cellars of the houses in the historic center that have flooded. The water is also filtered in the Town Hall building and in the changing rooms of the municipal stadium ”.

"It will be my responsibility - added the mayor of Mandas - to transmit the resolution to all competent bodies, starting from the Sardinia Region, to ask for immediate support in this particularly difficult situation. I also ask all citizens to report the damage to the Municipality to crops, things and buildings ".

COLDIRETTI - Coldiretti of Cagliari is in constant contact with its members both in Mandas and in Gesico and is monitoring the situation. "The most penalized sector, as it was clear from yesterday evening, is the wine sector - says the provincial president Giorgio Demurtas - the hailstorm hit the territory patchily, affecting more than 50% of the vineyards and in these the damage arrives in some cases up to 90%. The violence of the large hailstones cut the shoots, practically compromising the year ".

On the wheat fields , on the other hand, another important crop for these territories, according to Coldiretti it is still too early to take stock. We will have to wait a few more days to understand if there will be any losses. "Late and violent hailstorms are part of nature, unfortunately in recent years, due to climate change, they are becoming more constant as well as various other extreme calamitous events", comments the president of Coldiretti Cagliari.
