Farewell to "Pel di Carota", the Sardinian jockey who won the Palio di Siena with a trick that made history
Arturo Deiana, originally from Ilbono, was 84 years old. In 1966, riding for the Porcupine, he unfairly unseated the rival of the Lupa, then grabbing the reins of the shaken horseArturo Deiana, known as Pel di Carota, a jockey originally from Ilbono who entered the history of the Palio di Siena, died at the age of 84.
In his career he only competed in two editions of the famous race, but he managed to carve his name in history all the same.
On July 2, 1966 , in fact, called to mount Bolero, the horse of the Istrice district , he managed to win thanks to an impropriety that was as clever as it was sensational.
After the start, in fact, he unseated the colleague of the Lupa Bruno "Bozzolo" Deriu , to then grab the reins of his horse, Danubio, which - shaken - was heading towards the finish line.
The disputed victory cost him 8 disqualification stakes , but the Istrice district still remembers him as a hero today.
Deiana then competed in a second palio, in 1972 , mounted on Pythagoras, a horse from the Selva, but this time without surprises or luck: her race, the enthusiasts recall, ended in fact at the second San Martino, the most fearsome curve of the track in Campo square.
