He hit a car along the 131 and almost died. The accident involved Perdas, a young griffon vulture from the now large Sardinian colony. Yesterday afternoon the bird stopped for a short break on the guard rail on the side of the 131 state road, near Giave, in the direction of Sassari. He decided to resume his flight just as an overtaking car was passing by. Fortunately, the vehicle only grazed him, otherwise the impact would have left him no escape. A minor contact, all things considered.
From then on, the extraordinary network of friends of the griffon vulture – which in Sardinia includes public bodies, researchers, scholars, animal rights activists, environmentalists, volunteers, breeders, nature photographers, birdwatchers and lovers of outdoor activities – activated the rescue machine. A motorist contacted 1515, facilitating the arrival of the nearest patrol of the Forestry and Environmental Protection Corps and in the meantime taking care of protecting the animal from the heat and traffic. Also assisted by the men of the Anas and the State Police, the forestry agents captured and took charge of the animal to take it to the Forestas Wildlife Recovery Center, in Bonassai. According to the initial findings of the veterinarians, the animal did not suffer any fractures, responded well to the therapies administered for the state of shock and hyperthermia and remains under observation. Identified thanks to the ring and the unique series of discolorations on the feathers, the protagonist of the happy-ending accident is a young individual belonging to the contingent released in Villasalto on October 8, 2024.
Shortly after the liberation it crossed Sardinia along a diagonal trajectory that from the Monte Genis forest site, where the acclimatization aviary is located, reaches the coastal stretch between Bosa and Alghero, where it joined the colony historically present on the island.
