The last 21 young griffon vultures arrive from Spain, seven males and fourteen females, who landed in Porto Torres in recent days to become protagonists of LIFE Safe for Vultures, the project which aims to ensure the presence and long-term well-being of the griffon vulture population in Sardinia.
The individuals - one of which was born in captivity in the Mallorca zoo while the other twenty were found in difficulty in the wild and then totally rehabilitated in wildlife recovery centers - will participate in the repopulation plan to encourage the return of the griffon vultures to the Southern Sardinia , in an area where they historically had a home and performed important eco-systemic functions for extensive farming, becoming extinct after the Second World War due to a series of contributing causes.
The griffins were taken over by the regional Forestas Agency , partner of the project led by the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Sassari and in which the Region's Forestry and Environmental Surveillance Corps, E-Distribuzione and the Vulture conservation foundation. The staff of the Bonassai wildlife recovery center in Sassari welcomed and accommodated the animals in the "quarantine" aviaries, putting an end to a journey lasting more than 48 hours.
