The alarm went off a few days ago. And now the confirmation has arrived from the Venice experimental zooprophylactic institute : the experts have found the positivity to the avian flu virus in the flamingo found dead in the Cabras pond, close to the Mari Ermi beach.

In the first instance, the laboratory of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Sardinia found the presence of the virus in the bird, on the recommendation of the Animal Health Veterinary Service of the Asl of Oristano. Who had promptly issued an ordinance intended for poultry farmers and hunters to strengthen and intensify disease prevention and control measures.

Avian flu is a disease that can particularly affect chicken, turkey, guinea fowl, quail, pheasant, partridge, gray partridge.

"Usually wild birds don't get sick, but they can very easily transmit the infection to poultry farms," explained Antonio Montisci , head of the Oristano local health authority veterinary service.

“Avian viruses are normally not able to transmit easily from birds to humans, but they can acquire the ability to infect human cells. It is good to underline the importance of vaccination against human flu".

To date, there is no evidence that the infection can be transmitted to humans via food. In any case, poultry farms are subjected to strict controls.

The bird flu alarm had also been triggered in Cagliari in recent days, after the death of some birds in Monte Urpinu .
