Four workers at Eurallumina in Portovesme climbed into silo 3, inside the factory, approximately 40 meters above the ground. The workers are demanding immediate intervention from MIMIT, the Financial Security Committee, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, "to allocate the funds necessary for Eurallumina's continued operations," according to a union statement, "as required by law, to ensure payment of utilities, wages, and invoices to third-party contractors to ensure the continuation of environmental cleanups."
For two years, Eurallumina, owned by the Russian company Rusal, has been subject to sanctions imposed by the CSF following the war in Ukraine: " The financial management of the plant, amounting to over €20 million annually, was supported by Rusal until September, while the legislation," the unions argue, "provided for management, including financial management, by the CSF through the State Property Agency."
Now that Rusal has suspended transfers of funds to Eurallumina, the Ministry of the Economy and Finance is waiting for funds to cover the operating costs. "There's a risk," the unions say, "of drastic measures such as liquidation or bankruptcy." Since this morning, four workers have been protesting at a height of 40 meters, demanding government intervention.
