It was the town's grandmother, Tzia Teresina Loi, 101 springs, wearing the tricolor sash, who cut the ribbon for the inauguration this morning of the Piazza dei Centenari, a new jewel set in the corners rich in memories and stories told by those who have crossed time with patience and pride. In via Vittorio Emanuele, that place that pays homage to the longevity of a community where living beyond one hundred years was welcomed with enthusiasm by the Esterzilesi who, despite the cold temperatures, did not want to miss the mayor's invitation.
The square is a tribute to the “guardians of time”, those centenarians who with their resistant lives have passed down the history of Esterzili and its inhabitants. Watching over this symbolic space is the mural by the artist Mauro Patta. His brush strokes tell of wrinkles as deep as furrows in the rock, of eyes that have seen centuries pass by and hands that have worked tirelessly.
A few steps away, another work dialogues with this celebration of memory: the mural by Pina Monne, which almost overlooks Piazza Barbagia or Genn'e Idda, as they call it in Esterzili. Here, art and poetry intertwine. Pastoral symbols, mountain rhythms and verses engraved on the walls blend together in a visual harmony that tells the story of the local culture and preserves its soul. "The mountain tells of rhythms. Poetry will be born": a warning and a promise, an invitation to stop and rediscover the beauty of slow times and of life lived with intensity.
"From today for Esterzili, for Sardinia and for the whole world, there is a new destination to visit: a square that represents in all its parts, the identity, the strength, the beauty, the courage and the wisdom of the centenarians", said the mayor Renato Melis.
