Drought in Sardinia, the Region requests the Ministry to declare a state of natural disaster
Scarce rains, 18 thousand hectares of crops devastated: damages estimated at 9.6 millionThe Region has asked the Government to recognize the state of natural disaster for the drought that hit Sardinia between November 2023 and June 2024. A necessary step to obtain an "urgent declaration" that allows "access to the provisions of the National Solidarity Fund". The motivation: the "existence of the character of exceptional atmospheric adversity".
The green light came during today's council meeting on the proposal of the Agriculture Councillor Gianfranco Satta. According to data from the Region, over 18 thousand hectares of crops have been devastated, with a production loss of over 30% in over 500 agricultural companies and a need for compensation estimated at around 9.6 million euros. The areas affected are mainly Nuoro and Southern Sardinia.
With the certification of these data, the Region was able to activate the request that, according to European legislation, requires that the serious climatic event destroys more than 30% of the average annual production of a farmer calculated on the basis of the previous three years. For Councilor Satta, this is "a rapid response that demonstrates the concrete commitment of the Sardinian government towards the emergencies that involve our territories, highlighting the fundamental importance of the agricultural sector for the growth and development of the Island".
"Last June," said the Executive representative, "we instructed the Laore Agency to activate all the necessary procedures to verify the extent of the damage suffered by the companies. Now, with the resolution adopted today by the council, we have asked the Ministry to issue a provision that recognizes without ifs or buts the existence of the character of exceptional adverse weather conditions in the Sardinian territories."
