The water emergency in Sardinia is still scary. Especially after last summer, which brought breeders and farmers to their knees, crushed by the weight of drought. This is why Coldiretti Sardegna is asking the Region for a strategic regional plan for resource management . In a letter sent to the President of the Region Alessandra Todde , the agricultural organization led by Battista Cualbu and Luca Saba asks for the adoption of a multi-year plan that is capable of responding to emergencies starting from the foundations of climate change in Sardinia to translate everything into a program of structural interventions, capable of addressing these changes that are modifying the rainfall regime and water availability in the territory.
" Sardinia is now one of the regions that symbolize climate change - underlines President Cualbu - we come from a particularly difficult year with enormous economic losses linked to the loss of income and the increase in costs for the management of crops and livestock". The situation is also aggravated by water losses, equal to half of the water put into the pipes, "the lack of interconnection between the reservoirs and the obsolescence of the existing infrastructures. We ask the Region to intervene with a plan of concrete actions for the present and for the future of our businesses and of the entire island, counting on the fact that it is essential that Sardinia be at the center of a strategy for sustainable water management. However, we learn with satisfaction that politics, also from a bipartisan perspective, has begun to address the problem even if with a great delay".
Coldiretti, among the proposals put forward, suggests focusing on an overall vision to address both emergencies and long-term planning, including structural interventions such as the modernization of water networks , the construction of new dams , the interconnection of existing basins and the improvement of the management of strategic reserves . Continuous monitoring to analyze the evolution of the climate over the last twenty years, with particular attention to the rainfall regime, the frequency of atmospheric events and the most affected areas. Economic support to strengthen agricultural insurance and guarantee extraordinary funds to companies affected by drought.
