A new blow on the horizon for the agro-pastoral world of Southern Sardinia during the 2025 irrigation season: less than 5 thousand hectares of cultivated land and 40 million euros up in smoke are expected.
Once again, Coldiretti Cagliari is raising the alarm, highlighting the difficulties of companies: «Structural interventions and immediate resources are needed».
«After a 2024 marked by drought and a drastic reduction in water availability, 2025 also looks worrying».
According to a new analysis by Coldiretti Cagliari on Adis-Istat data, in fact, the 30% reduction in water resources for the next irrigation season will put another 5 thousand hectares of crops in the area at risk, with a direct loss of income of approximately 26 million euros for agricultural businesses. Added to these are another 10 million euros of losses related to the loss of value of the induced, for an overall damage that is close to 40 million euros in 2025 alone.
Heavy numbers, which become dramatic if added to those of the previous year, with at least 80 million euros lost in two seasons and many, too many work units disappeared in the local agricultural sector.
The main cause remains the lack of water, with the Consorzio di Bonifica del Sud Sardegna forced to reduce supplies to farmers to cope with the crisis. "A cut that, although reduced compared to the initial hypothesis of 50%, still remains 30%, with serious repercussions for the entire agricultural production system. A situation mitigated also thanks to the intervention of the Region with the 35 million cubic meters of water made available for Southern Sardinia", highlights the association in a press release.
"We still vividly remember the many actions implemented by Coldiretti to highlight the thirst of the fields and the need for interventions - says Giorgio Demurtas, president of Coldiretti Cagliari - above all, the large demonstrations of two years ago on the eastern coast, from South to North, with the large mobilization on the 'sea routes' and then that of last year and early 2025 in the prefectures, with the involvement and support of the Prefect of Cagliari. But even today we are very far from having implemented everything necessary, both in terms of compensation for the affected companies, and for the plan of urgent and structural works".
Demurtas also recognizes the commitment and work of the Land Reclamation Consortium, which "is doing everything possible to ensure the maximum flow of water to all members."
He then launches an appeal to the Sardinia Region to "intervene urgently, with timely and effective measures to save businesses and protect the future of agriculture in the territory".
The director of Coldiretti Cagliari, Giuseppe Casu, is of the same opinion, underlining the importance of a long-term vision: «We need urgent intervention on programming, we are talking about a fundamental agricultural system and for this reason it is necessary to plan strategic actions and works, some of which have already been identified and proposed by the same Consorzio di Bonifica» and he recalls how the reuse of waste water «is a circular economy solution that can make an important contribution. In this time we need vision, but also immediate answers to calmly face the next irrigation season, produce fundamental goods to feed the population and build territorial economies essential for the regional economic system».
