The arrival in Sardinia of 120 inmates after the collapse of part of the roof of a section of Regina Coeli prison calls politics into question. It is the only institution with the power to raise a formal protest. Yet we have not heard a single voice raised to oppose this absurd plan and restore the dignity and rights of those transferred and those who live and work on the island . Our silence risks being interpreted as approval for yet another act of arrogance by the Ministry, if not outright complicity.

Maria Grazia Caligaris, president of the "Socialismo Diritti Riforme" association, supports this, adding that "120 inmates in Sardinian prisons are an unbearable burden for staff and facilities. The entire system is unconstitutional."

"Union sources highlight staggering numbers," he reveals. "The secretary of the USPP specifies that 60 have been allocated between Bancali and Alghero, 31 in Massama, and 26 in Cagliari-Uta. As is well known, these institutions are well beyond regulatory limits. Cagliari-Uta reaches 134.2% overcrowding; Sassari-Bancali 126.2%; Alghero 125%; and Oristano 110%. It should be noted that in Sardinia, regulatory capacity has dropped to 2,348 because 231 are unavailable (104 in Nuoro, 54 in Oristano, 50 in Is Arenas, and 23 in Isili)."

"The mass transfer of prisoners," concludes the president of SDR, "confirms once again how little Minister Nordio cares about the fate of the island and how little weight was given not only to the population's outcry over the imminent arrival of the 41bis prison in Uta, but also to the formal meeting with the President of the Region. A deaf minister in a blind government."
