A high-powered firecracker exploded in his hand and he had to have the phalanx of his left thumb amputated. Dramatic afternoon yesterday for a 21-year-old from Decimomannu. The young man ended up in Surgery at Brotzu Hospital.
The young man, together with his friends, was in the stands of the municipal stadium "Dessì-Locci" to cheer on his favorite football team, Decimo 07, who were playing against "Calcio Capoterra", a top-of-the-table challenge between the top two in the standings that opened the first day of the return leg of the Second Category championship, group B.
The moments of euphoria following the goal scored by the first team of Decime turned into moments of panic: the roar of the firecracker, the splashes of blood and the flying splinters made the hundreds of people who had gathered to watch the football clash jump in the stands . Others present also went to the emergency room because they had been hit by splinters.
For the 21-year-old, the phalanx of his thumb was amputated and a suspected fracture of the index finger of his left hand : the boy spent the night at Brotzu in the hand surgery department where doctors attempted to reconstruct the damaged parts of the limb.
