No one to blame for the collapse of a wing of the building that housed the Faculty of Languages, in the Humanistic Center of Sa Duchessa, in Cagliari. It was October 18, 2022.
Judge Ermengarda Ferrarese acquitted Antonio Pillai, a University manager, of the charge of collapse and manslaughter disaster. Pillai was accused of not having carried out a safety assessment in 2012, when the air conditioning system was installed and neglecting – at least according to the Prosecutor's Office's hypothesis – the fact that the attic had already presented problems. The public prosecutor Giangiacomo Pilia had requested a sentence of one and a half years in prison for the alleged manslaughter responsibilities in the collapse.
During the investigations , several people – including the rector Francesco Mola – had been entered in the register of suspects, but the positions had all been archived after the consultancy and expert assessment ordered by the investigating judge of the court in an evidentiary incident.
Only for Pillai had a referral to trial been requested. The technician chose the abbreviated trial and was defended by the lawyers Riccardo Fiorelli and Roberto Schioccola. Today the trial ended with an acquittal because the fact does not constitute a crime.
