Two nesting attempts by Caretta caretta turtles on the Castiadas coast in recent days. The staff of the Marine Protected Area of Capo Carbonara announced: "On June 30, on the beach of Sant'Elmo - the experts clarify in a note - a nesting attempt by a sea turtle was confirmed. The tracks were noticed by a family on the beach. Unfortunately, after having dug about twenty centimeters into the sand, the turtle encountered a layer of rock that prevented it from creating the nest for laying eggs."
Another report on July 3, from the beach of Cala Sinzias, again in Castiadas. The biologists of the Marine Area intervened immediately but no signs were found that confirmed the actual nesting.
Experts therefore urge swimmers to immediately report any trace or sighting: waiting too long could make it impossible to confirm the deposition.
"It is possible - concludes the Marine Area staff - to spot turtles during the evening or night hours while they are looking for a suitable place to lay their eggs."
The numbers to call are 1515 (Forestry Corps) or the Port Authority (1530).
