Long queues and controversy have occurred on the San Pietro bridge in Castiadas, even with the "smart" traffic lights. Cars coming from Cagliari to reach Villasimius or Costa Rei have had to wait up to 40 minutes over the past two days (including at night).
And so this morning, the mayor of Castiadas, Eugenio Murgioni, along with the local police, intervened to turn off the traffic lights. "We decided," the mayor explained, "to temporarily suspend the traffic lights, which were causing interminable lines and completely unbearable travel times. At the same time, at my request, the municipal police commander organized a permanent presence during rush hour to manually regulate traffic flow. I hope that this solution, albeit temporary, will allow for a gradual return to normality."
Murgioni added that "it's now clear that the real solution lies in structural intervention, namely the reconstruction of the bridge, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari. I hope that the relevant body will give the right priority to this crucial project and that the work can be started and completed before the start of the next tourist season."
