Cagliari, urgent restoration works: Bonaria cemetery closes

Today, Tuesday 25 March, is the last day of opening of the Bonaria cemetery. Due to urgent extraordinary maintenance work, from Wednesday 26 the structure will remain closed until the end of the restoration operations. The measure by the Municipality of Cagliari was necessary to preserve public safety, with the intervention - which cannot be postponed - that will improve the safety and usability of the spaces.
The municipal administration has allocated over 13 million euros for the restoration of the Bonaria cemetery . The structure will be repurposed and enhanced. The works included in the project concern the complete renovation of the existing plant equipment, the creation of a new lighting system, the restoration, care and enhancement of the greenery, in addition to the structural consolidation of the monuments and the geological consolidation of the landslide fronts.
In addition, the entrance reception facilities will be completed and improved. Cultural visits may, at the end of the works, also include access to the Punic and Roman tombs present inside the Bonaria cemetery. The "Garden of Memories", i.e. the space that the Municipality had planned for the dispersion of the ashes of the deceased, will be temporarily transferred to the cemetery of San Michele : during the works a new temple will be created.
