They hadn't even had time to plant them before they were stolen. Someone, during the night between Saturday and Sunday, uprooted twenty trees that had just been planted at the roundabout built on the state highway at the exit of the municipality of Riola Sardo, near the petrol station, heading towards Cuglieri, between provincial roads 11 and 66. The operation was carried out as part of the municipality's green space redevelopment and maintenance project. Many of the trees were also damaged.
«Actions of this type do not only represent material damage», comments the councillor for Public Works of the Municipality of Riola Sardo, Davide Demontis, «public greenery is a common good, financed by the resources of all citizens: every tree or bush contributes to making our streets more liveable and to making the places in which we live more decorous.
Uprooting these plants means depriving our land of value and nullifying the work of those who strive to make our land more beautiful."
The hope is that "those responsible for this act will reflect on the impact of their actions and understand that caring for shared spaces is the first step towards building a civil and respectful community. Now it's up to all of us citizens to remain vigilant, protect our common goods, and continue to demand and spread respect for public greenery."
