The 23-year-old Tunisian man caught on Sunday afternoon stealing two rental bicycles in Piazza Marcello Serra, the area between the courthouse and the Cagliari police headquarters, was arrested in flagrante delicto.

The man, already known to law enforcement, had been reported a few hours earlier as a suspected perpetrator of several thefts that had occurred on Poetto beach.

The alarm was raised following a report of two people, both of foreign origin, making off with stolen bicycles . Officers from the police's Flying Squad managed to track down one of the two suspects on Via Sonnino. The young man was pedaling one bicycle while dragging another.

The bicycles, both damaged, were recovered and returned to the rental company. The 23-year-old was taken to the police station and arrested on charges of aggravated theft.

The summary hearing was held on Monday, during which the preliminary investigations judge validated the arrest and issued the clearance for expulsion .

The young man was then transferred to the Repatriation Detention Center (CPR) in Macomer, where the repatriation procedure to his country of origin will be initiated.
