After years of construction, diversions, and delays, Line 1 (San Gottardo – Repubblica) is back in service. Starting Monday, the metro will resume passenger service, reestablishing a direct connection between the city center and the Monserrato University Hospital, which can be reached in just 22 minutes.
The reopening comes after the completion of the doubling of tracks on the Gennari–Caracalla section and the completion of safety tests by the National Railway Safety Agency, which gave the final green light to resume service. The first train will depart at 6:04 a.m. from Piazza Repubblica.
"The reactivation of the light rail system represents an important moment for the Metropolitan City of Cagliari," said Transport Councilor Barbara Manca. "Residents will finally be able to enjoy the benefits they've been waiting for after years of inevitable inconvenience. Now we must continue toward completion of the project up to Piazza Matteotti."
With its reopening, this line once again becomes a key hub for students, commuters, and workers who travel daily between Cagliari, Monserrato, Quartucciu, Selargius, and Settimo San Pietro , integrating with urban and suburban bus services.
The new operating schedule includes trams every 10 minutes during rush hour (7am-3pm and 5pm-7pm) and every 20 minutes during the rest of the day and on holidays, with service active from 6am to 10.30pm.
The doubling of the tracks will increase the capacity and regularity of the service, reducing travel times and improving punctuality .
Thanks to the integrated network, it will be possible, for example, to reach Piazza Repubblica from Settimo San Pietro in 32 minutes or to get to the Policlinico Hospital from Maracalagonis in half an hour, by combining bus and tram. Updated timetables are available on the official Sardegna Mobilità website.
