"Just a few days ago, we were at Punta Molentis to shoot the video for our home jersey. The fire that sadly devastated it today is just the latest in Sardinia. Cagliari extends its deepest sympathies to all the communities affected." This is the statement from Cagliari Calcio, posted on social media, expressing their shock over the devastating fire that broke out on Sunday near the jewel of the Sarrabus beach.
And what happened in Villasimius also sparked reactions from politicians.
"What happened in recent hours at Punta Molentis in Villasimius, as in every other part of Sardinia, is criminal," commented Giuseppe Frau, vice president of the regional council , in a statement. He added: "I am close to the affected populations, and I thank all those involved in the firefighting and evacuation. Those responsible, shameless criminals, must be prosecuted and severely punished for the incalculable damage and destruction they are causing to our beloved island."
And then Salvatore Deidda, Sardinian parliamentarian for the Brothers of Italy party : "The damage caused by these fires, whether intentional or negligent, is incalculable, but it is intolerable to have to continue dealing with these emergencies. Today was a particularly critical day due to the strong winds, so much so that the traditional immersion for the celebration of the Madonna del Naufrago in Villasimius had to be cancelled due to the adverse sea conditions.
For this reason,” Deidda concludes, “our thanks are doubly due to all those who are working on this day with such dedication and sacrifice.”
