New resources to strengthen and make the transport system in Sardinia more sustainable. The announcement was made by Councillor Barbara Manca, with the measures that were approved by the Regional Council in the budget variation. The funds will allow for improved safety and efficiency of rail and car transport.

"These investments are essential to guarantee Sardinia a modern, safe and environmentally friendly transport network" , commented Councilor Manca. "With the support of the Regional Council, the Department of Transport continues with determination towards the goal of more accessible and sustainable mobility for all Sardinian citizens".

One of the most anticipated projects concerns the light metro of Cagliari, whose construction site has been open for years amidst countless inconveniences. To complete the section from Piazza Repubblica to Piazza Matteotti, additional funds have been allocated to deal with the unexpected costs that emerged during the execution of the works. The main challenges have concerned the adjustment to the new prices for the contracts, the need for redesign due to archaeological finds and interference with the urban trolleybus network. Thanks to these new resources, it will be possible to complete the work ensuring integration with the archaeological context and guaranteeing compliance with the infrastructural needs of the area .

But it's not just Cagliari. The Region has launched an investment program to update rolling stock, both railway and automotive, in line with European safety and environmental sustainability standards. However, the increase in the prices of raw materials and fuels, accentuated by the pandemic crisis and the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine, has led to additional costs. In particular, Arst has requested cost adjustments for the supply of two railway traction units, for a total of over 1.3 million euros. To meet these needs and ensure continuity of service, a three-year fund (2024-2026) has been set up to cover these additional costs .

In response to the risk of landslides along the Chilivani-Porto Torres railway line, the Region has confirmed its commitment to financing 40% of the work needed to secure the route. With a total investment required of approximately 22 million euros, the Region will contribute over 8.8 million to the construction of barriers and a rockfall tunnel . The project will be completed with the contribution of Rfi and in collaboration with local authorities.

Finally, as part of the safety enhancement on the Cagliari-Golfo Aranci railway line, interventions are planned to eliminate three level crossings at Oristano and Sassari-Porto Torres . In particular, the project includes the construction of roundabouts and new connecting roads, in addition to the creation of underpasses, which will allow for a safer and smoother flow of traffic. These interventions will reduce interference between the railway and road networks, while improving citizen safety.
