A persistent, acrid smell coming from the dirt road used as a parking lot by residents between Via Curie and Via Corsica aroused suspicion among residents, and from there came the macabre discovery: the lifeless body of a man was found inside an old camper van, parked in the area for some time.
The victim was named Carlo Sanfilippo, a 75-year-old former music teacher, who reportedly lived permanently in the vehicle, which was used as a shelter.
The discovery was made this morning, when a strong odor prompted some citizens to report the situation to the authorities.
The Carabinieri of Cagliari, the local police and the firefighters intervened on site, who forced access to the vehicle and discovered the tragic scene.
The body, in an advanced state of decomposition, was lying inside the camper . Initial reports suggest the man had died of natural causes some time ago, but the results of the forensic examination are pending to confirm the cause.
The camper was seized and the body transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy . No apparent signs of violence were found at the scene.
Investigations are underway to reconstruct the last weeks of the man's life and understand whether anyone may have overlooked warning signs.
