Double exceptional intervention at San Martino di Oristano, in the Complex Orthopedics Structure, on two over one hundred years old.

The two women, aged 103 and 105, underwent a perfectly successful operation for a fractured femur.

«A traumatic event occurred for both ladies, namely the fall and breaking of the femur. These are the so-called fragility fractures, due to the state of the bones linked to advanced age. In the 105-year-old patient, who will turn 106 this year, I placed a hip prosthesis while in the 103-year-old patient an intramedullary nail", explains Davide Caddeo, specialist at the University of Sassari in Orthopedics and Traumatology, who currently works in the SC Orthopedics of San Martino, involved in both operations, under the coordination of Dr. Andrea Ruiu.

The surgery for the hip replacement lasted about an hour, 20 minutes for the nail

«Two major surgeries, both carried out urgently, both went very well. Both patients are continuing their lives in an absolutely normal manner, eating on their own and starting the rehabilitation process the day after the operation. An excellent fiber in both cases", adds Caddeo.

But there is no talk of resignation yet. «We as a department prefer to discharge patients upon desuture, otherwise one of the two patients would already be discharged on the fifth day. We will do it on the tenth post-operative day", specifies the doctor.

The two patients «have already started rehabilitation and have both already been put back on their feet», clarifies Caddeo, who carried out the positioning of the hip prosthesis with his colleague, Dr. Alessio Guala, while the nail with another colleague, the Dr. Paolo Sanna, both medical directors of the San Martino Complex Orthopedics Structure.
