Assisted procreation, in Cagliari the “cryobank” that safeguards life
“Genera” is the first private center in Sardinia for fertilization. It is led by Professor Giovanni MonniVideo di Piera Serusi
Professor Giovanni Monni, 73 years old, director of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Microcitemico of Cagliari for four decades (until two years ago), presents the cryobank of the Genera centre of Cagliari, the first private facility in Sardinia for medically assisted procreation .
The facility, opened in July last year with headquarters in Cagliari, welcomes couples who for various reasons are unable to conceive a child . Couples who in our region can also turn to the three public services (Microcitemico, Monserrato polyclinic and AOU hospital in Sassari) but at the moment only for homologous fertilization (eggs and sperm from the couple themselves); while for heterologous fertilization, that is with gametes from a donor (only eggs or only seminal fluid, or both: in Italy it has been allowed since 2014), if they want to have a contribution for health and travel expenses (the service falls within the levels of assistance of the Health Service) they must turn to public or private facilities "accredited nationally and internationally", warns the resolution of the Region.
A paradox and a mockery: in order to receive the contribution, Sardinian couples cannot turn to the only centre in Sardinia where it is possible to do heterologous assisted procreation (a service that public hospitals do not provide).
