A bomb dating back to the Second World War was detonated this morning by the Army's bomb squad.

The remainder, a 101 mm artillery shell made in the United States, was found in recent days by a worker from a company who was carrying out work in the industrial area of Macchiareddu, in the municipality of Assemini.

The specialists of the 5th engineer sapper regiment of the "Sassari" Brigade intervened on the spot who, with the medical support of the Italian Red Cross and the carabinieri of the Assemini station, took care of the safety and transport of the bomb in the Monte Arrubiu quarry, not far from Sarroch.

The blasting operations, which ended at 10.50, were authorized and coordinated by the Command of the Southern Operational Forces of Naples, following an express request from the Cagliari prefecture. The discovery of war remnants on the island is not a rare event.

A similar intervention with the specialized assets of the "Sassari" Brigade had become necessary in April, when a dangerous bomb was discovered in a park in the town of Palau.
