Ecological bombs loaded with asbestos that are by no means invisible, old factories and sheds in the industrial area of Porto Torres that contain asbestos, used in the construction of plants in the 1960s until it was banned, but without a ban on the use of the structures already built. And the risk that the dust could be released remains.

An assessment made by the president of the environmental association "Let's protect the Gulf of Asinara", Giuseppe Alesso , who addressed a letter to the Public Health and Hygiene Service - Asl of Sassari to report that many of the industrial buildings were made with material containing eternit and that "these old plants have now been abandoned for tens of years and, having never been reclaimed of the asbestos they contain, with their erosion and flaking they release the dangerous asbestos fibres ".

In particular, two abandoned factories with a high risk of asbestos are underlined: the former Ferriera Sarda and the former Cementir. The health effects of asbestos fibers have been certified by medical literature for decades. Asbestos minerals, in fact, are divided into gradually thinner fibers. Thus they can be easily inhaled and cause serious inflammation, asbestosis, mesothelioma and other types of cancer and often fatal diseases.

The letter underlines that "on several occasions many citizens have expressed their concern about this situation and in particular - underlines Alesso - on windy days, for the raising of clouds of dust near these buildings, the composition of which could almost certainly , contain asbestos and therefore pose a serious danger to public health ”.
