"A decoy in the eyes of citizens."

This is how the provincial secretariats of the State Police Siulp, Siap and Silp CGIL define the proposal, made by the president of the Regional Council Michele Pais, to place the army in the historic center of Sassari after last Thursday's shooting.

"The specific task of preventing and repressing crimes - they recall in a joint statement - as well as protecting public order and safety, is the strict responsibility of the State Police and other Police Forces".

Among other things, they underline, the military could not act autonomously but always supported by carabinieri and police officers. The three acronyms then report that the intervention of the army is "the ultima ratio" while it would be better "to guarantee the serenity and prompt intervention of the police forces in our cities, increase the number of State Police personnel and of the other Police Forces".

Which have been suffering for some time from a staff shortage due, they declare, to "the hiring freeze and the lack of turnover of state police personnel and other police forces". Therefore it is up to politics to find solutions to remedy the critical issues described.
