Anesthesiologists are not enough, child patients of Microcitemico hostages of catheters: "Waiting for months to remove them"
The Asgop complaint: the little ones are suspended in limbo between Asl and Brotzu, companies that share the hospital's activitiesPer restare aggiornato entra nel nostro canale Whatsapp
Life denied, for the patients of the Oncohematolgia department of the Microcitemico of Cagliari , because the anesthesiologists who have to follow them are not enough. Thus no one can remove the venous catheter - which is used to administer the treatments they must undergo to fight the tumor - and they, when their physical conditions allow it, do not have the possibility to go to the beach or practice any activity that puts them at risk. the medical device with which they live.
It happens because the Antonio Cao hospital is suspended between two companies: it is under the responsibility of the ASL but the Brotzu doctors intervene. The anesthetists of the first company, which belongs to the Santissima Trinità, recently filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office because they do not have specific skills in the pediatric sector and prefer - in compliance with the law - not to "touch" children.
Those of the second, Arnas, are few and must also look after the little patients of their hospital: the perfect mess. And it is the sick children who pay the price.
The umpteenth complaint was made public by the active (in spite of herself) representative of Asgop, the association of parents of pediatric Onocohematology, Francesca Ziccheddu.
«Now in the ward there is a long waiting list of little patients who have been waiting for months (even more than three) for the pediatric anesthetist to remove the central venous catheter in order to be free again to dive into the sea, the lake, go in the shower, to play with the pump in these very hot days», he points out.
Ziccheddu explains: «The central venous catheter is an indispensable “companion” for oncohaematological treatments, it allows infusions of chemotherapy, other medicines and withdrawals without punctures and without feeling pain. It is therefore necessary to put it urgently at the debut ». Of treatment in the hospital, of course.
But it can happen, as it has happened, that there are "three new leukemia onset in the last month and a half, 3 patients who have to perform the transplant, 2 biopsies and a 22-month-old child who has to repeat the operation because 3 times he slipped away." And a child who is experiencing the remission phase of the disease must wait: months. There are no alternatives.
«And this why?», asks Ziccheddu, ready to provide the answer, «because this delicate procedure is still performed only by a Brotzu anesthetist with the help of another pediatric anesthetist, despite the fact that we are in charge of Local Health Authority 8 as decided since the reform. The few professionals specialized in pediatrics are headed by Brotzu».
