154kg of food products of plant or animal origin were seized in the first months of 2025 at Alghero airport by officials of the Customs and Monopolies Agency of Sassari in synergy with the Financiers of the Alghero Company.
These are mainly meat, seeds, tropical fruit and vegetables, sometimes in poor condition, unidentifiable, without labels certifying their origin and species and without the relevant phytosanitary certification.
The food was found inside the luggage of passengers from all over the world, mostly from Senegal, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Congo, China, Albania, Peru, the Philippines and the Republic of Guinea arriving in Alghero from the intercontinental hubs of the Peninsula.
The plants were subjected to administrative seizure in application of the provisions of Regulations (EU) no. 2016/2031 and no. 2017/625, to combat the introduction into the territory of the European Union of harmful organisms and pathogenic agents infesting native species.
The vegetables are being held in temporary customs custody at Alghero airport awaiting health and hygiene analyses by the phytopathologist of the Department of Agriculture and Agro-pastoral Reform of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, while the meat has been confiscated for disposal.
