Sardinia could be destined to welcome an increasing number of migrants. This is foreseen in a recent circular from the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Pientedosi, which rewrites the criteria for distributing the guests of the centers throughout the country.

The exclusive criterion, until now, was that of the proportion with respect to the resident population. For this reason, a maximum of 3 percent of those landed on the Italian coasts had been transferred to the island. Now the Viminale, according to what was reported by Corriere della Sera, adds the parameter of the territorial extension of the assignment region, which will have a 30% weight on the management of flows towards the structures managed by the Prefectures.

According to statistics published by the Ministry of the Interior, as of August 15 , there were just 2,098 immigrants on the island, out of a total of 132,000. While in 2023 in Italy (data updated to 18 August) over 102,000 foreigners arrived. An enormous pressure that required new rules.

The Prefecture of Cagliari has already issued notices for the search for structures to be used as reception centres.
