As many as 1,394 road accidents, with thirty deaths and 1,932 injuries. These are the numbers recorded in the province of Sassari last year, in an area populated by 473,629 people and 446,717 vehicles. An increase compared to 2021 when, on the same roads, there were 1,315 accidents, twenty-five deaths and 1,853 injuries.
These are the statistics developed by the Automobile Club of Italy and Istat on accidents in Italy, which unfortunately show a return of road accidents to the levels of 2019, before the pandemic.
In 2022, there were ten deaths and 322 injuries among motorcyclists, among cyclists one dead and forty-seven injured (twelve with electric and four on an electric scooter), while among pedestrians two women died and 158 injured.
The top three causes of accidents are failure to respect signs (415, 34.1%), distracted driving (252, 20.7%) and failure to observe a safety distance (216, 17.7%), while speed affects 9.45% of cases with 115 accidents.

The majority of accidents (815) were recorded on urban roads (six victims and 1,066 injured).
In 2022, fourteen people between the ages of 30 and 54 died (760 injured), five between the ages of 55 and 64 (231 injured) and nine aged 65 and over (268 injured). Two young people aged between 18 and 29 lost their lives, with 483 injured.

«Among the main causes there are always distracted driving and the use of mobile phones, preceded by failure to respect road signs and followed by failure to observe the safety distance», stated the president of the Automobile Club of Sassari Giulio Pes di San Victor. «To combat this phenomenon we need greater training, more widespread information, starting from schools and a greater number of controls. A green and eco-sustainable culture is also necessary to better manage the most modern means of transport, but above all to remember that respect for the rules and the Highway Code is not an optional, but an obligation, for our safety and the safety of others".
